Talk to the real man, Song Il-Kook
While alpha women, who take care of not only their own problems but also their man’s, are dominating this generation, the TV shows are flooded with vulnerable male characters. All of a sudden, I wanted to strike up a conversation with a masculine man.
As actor Song Il-Kook accepts the interview about change of conception that overturns the trend, he truly is ‘the change of conception.’ Without his title as a celebrity, one can see ‘human’ Song Il-Kook underneath. The man you want to have a drink with whenever feeling empty. This is his story.
Start Building Up Acting Skills.
The drama was almost about to end, but Song Il-Kook standing in front of the camera didn’t seem to get rid of his character in A Man Called God yet. He still had a sharp-edged lingering imagery; Gang-Ta’s eyes full of revengeful ‘madness’ to get back his dead father’s honor. “I had spent the past year fully preparing for A Man Called God, but I was embarrassed when I watched the episodes 1 and 2.
I never had an experience that I wanted to change the channel when I was on the show, but this time it was different. There should have been a ‘human being’ represented through the character, but instead, there was a model (who only had good looks).” Perhaps it was due to his greed to change into Gang-Ta the ‘strong man.’ ‘Building up’ acting skills without giving out too much, it is still difficult.
To get back to his original intention while strengthen the ‘basics,’ he threw his hat into the ring for the play for the first time since his debut. He will be playing Korean’s esteemed independence activist, Ahn Joong-Geun who reminds him of his great grandfather (General Kim Jwa-Jin).

In this Generation, I Want to Live As a ‘Man.’
Historical dramas like Hae Shin and Jumong where Song Il-Kook played the main role hit the records and naturally gave him an image of a ‘hero.’ Having general Kim Jwa-Jin as his great grandfather and the hero Kim Du-Hwan in Jongro, Seoul ‘that time’ as his grandfather has always been a question waiting for him to answer. “I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but I put much time thinking of how to live like a man".
One day I was talking with my wife in bed and she asked me, ‘What do you think is the way to live like a man?’ So I answered, ‘Wouldn’t it be being responsible for what I say?’ She said that was what she wanted to hear. At least I gave her the answer she wanted.” Song Il-Kook’s great grandfather tried to be the ‘man’ that his own generation thirsted for and grandfather was also recorded in the history as the ‘man’ his generation was in need of.
What would be the man our current generation asks for? “Our society is having problems such as constantly increasing divorce rate and resulting into family breakdowns. Being a good father and a good husband, perhaps?” Let’s not blame the dream of ‘the grandson of the general’ for its simplicity. It is too tough to live in this generation as a ‘good father’ and a ‘good husband.’
Man, Cries at the Mountainside.
There is an old saying that a man can officially cry only three times in his lifetime. This man, generally considered as a ‘macho’ man, has already cried numerous times in public.
“General Baek Ya Kim Jwa-Jin Memorial League goes on “Cheongsan-ri Historical Journey’ with college students three times a year. I used to join them because of my mother (laugh) but my mind changed after the ‘Tae Geuk Gi (Korean national flag) Incident’ a few years ago.
When I led the members to the top of Mountain Baek Du, we shouted ‘Dae~ Han Min Gook’ and sung the national anthem out loud while flying Tae Geuk Gi. The Public Security Officers came to our hotel to seize Tae Geuk Gi later on. At first we gave them the nicely folded Tae Geuk Gi because we didn’t want this incident to cause any problems between nations, but at night we were so upset that we couldn’t even sleep.
I woke up all the members in the middle of the night. 160 members walked to the Public Security Office only counting on 3 flashlights and got back our Tae Geuk Gi, and suddenly tears dropped. Every one of us cried with one another and at the end I found myself wailing.”
His pent-up anger that day might have been ‘something’ that is sleeping in his deep down. It may not only be Song Il-Kook the Jumong’s anger in the lost land, Goguryeo.
Oblivion is God’s ‘Blessing’
He used to blame his mother. He wanted to ask the reason why she busied herself in ‘rebuilding’ her father’s traces as an independence activist. The whole family had to move from 200-square-meter apartment in Gangnam to leased apartments in Gangbook to supply funds for restoring General Kim Jwa-Jin’s birthplace and founding his memorial hall.
“I wasn’t famous then and we were asked to vacate our place. Surprisingly, though, I got a role in the weekend drama Terms of Endearment and people started to notice me right before we got kicked out of the house. I had another opportunity to take a part in Hae Shin, and I hit that big, as they say.
I was in 7 commercials after Hae Shin. That helped me clear all of my mother’s debt and buy a new house.” Though people say they’re going under a difficult phase in their lives, it will pass by. It may be wise to live optimistically to minimize stress.
That’s why oblivion is considered as ‘God’s blessing.’ He is ‘blessed by God’ and able to erase bad memories, but he has one thing he should never forget.
This is the advice that his mother, who doesn’t give out compliments too often and only complimented her son two times in over 10 years, gave him as a senior actress. “‘The moment you think there is someone who is worse than you, you will fail,’ she said.” Doesn’t her advice make a perfect harmony with the attitudes of an ‘iron man’ who completed six times of triathlon towards the life? See further but not hastily, relax but have a clear goal.
